Exciting News From Our Music Department! Yes!!

On Friday February 15, Mr. Corbett  attended the OBA awards reception where a number of special awards of distinction were presented to elementary and high school band directors to recognize the achievement of their students. St. Andrew’s MS did not leave empty handed.

First, the Senior Concert Band was presented with an award for Overall Outstanding Performance in the B200 class.

Second, the Junior Concert Band was selected, based on their level of performance at the festival, to be the demonstration concert band for the annual OBA Beginner Band Symposium on Saturday October 5, 2019 which is held at York University.

We are so proud of the accomplishments of our Junior and Senior Band students at the 2019 Ontario Band Association Music Festival. Congratulations!

Ontario Band Association Performances

Early this week our Junior and Senior Concert Bands performed in the Ontario Band Association Music Festival under the direction of Mr. Corbett. After weeks of rehearsals before school, at lunch and after school, it was time to demonstrate to a panel of adjudicators all that the students had learned about music, problem solving, time management, and themselves. The adjudicators were delighted with the performances of both concert bands and enjoyed working with the students afterwards. The adjudicators found our students to be delightful to work with and very responsive to the suggestions they made for improvement.  Both Concert Bands performed three pieces of music extremely well and were awarded Gold, the highest ranking, signifying that they had achieved excellence in all facets of their performance. Here are some students views on the OBA experience:

“As we started playing for the adjudicators, I felt nervous at first, until I realized that we had worked on all of the key points weeks ago. We played and were really absorbed into the music which was so familiar to me.” Matthew C

“Finally, it was time to perform. There was a lot of pressure but everyone was so supportive.  Later on Mr. Corbett said that he had an announcement to make… we got gold! We were so happy and everyone instantly had a big smile on their face. On the bus ride back to school everyone was still so happy and surprised we got gold. We had an amazing experience and we can’t wait to perform again.” Amanda R

“As Mr.Corbett started turning towards us to play
‘Callisto’, I felt a sudden unexpected surge of excitement. The more I
played, the more I could feel the tension and stress from the weeks of
rehearsal and practice going away. After our photo session was done,
Mr.Corbett announced that we got Gold. The cries of jubilation echoed around
the hall and everyone had the same blissful look on their face. It was one of
the greatest feelings we could have; the feeling of achievement.”

Congratulations to the all of the students who represented our school so well at the OBA Music Festival and good luck to all of the students who will perform in the Kiwanis Music Festival over the next couple of weeks.

Here is a sample of the great event:
